Klavan's "Gideon" booked on Fox
By Liza Foreman
Writer
Andrew Klavan is on a roll. 20th Century Fox has picked up his spec
script "Gideon" for mid-against high- six figures, making
it the third Klavan project to sell in as many weeks. Mike Macari
and Niel Edelstein of Macari/Edelstein ("The Ring") will
produce.
"Gideon"
centers on a young female artist who imagines evil figures so deeply
that they cross over into her real world. The story starts out in
a rural college town and then moves to the city. Robbie Brenner
will oversee for Fox, with Klavan executive producing.
"I've
had a good month," Klavan said. "'Gideon' grows out of
my love for Gothic art and romantic poetry. The romantics thought
that the imagination was more real than the real world."
Macari/Edelstein
which is producing "The Ring 2" and "The Invisible"
for spyglass, have worked with Klavan during the past several months
to develop "Gideon". It's the second time the two parties
have collaborated following the sale of an untitled Klavan script
to Gold Circle last month. Macari/Edelstein will produce the feature,
which revolves around a widow and her daughter, whose father comes
back to haunt her. Gold Circle's Paul Brooks will also produce.
"We
get along so well and understand this type of material so well that
I even broke my own rule of not showing anyone a script until it
is ready," Klavan said about Macari/Edelstein.
Then
last week, Lions Gate optioned the right to Klavan's novel "Man
and Wife," to which James Foley is attached to direct. Klavan
will adapt.
No
stranger to the big screen, two of Klavan's novels have been developed
into films. "True Crime" was adapted into a Clint Eastwood
starrer for Warner Bros. Pictures, and "Don't Say A Word"
was made into a Michael Douglas film for Fox. Known primarily for
crime fiction, other Klavan titles include "Hunting Down Amanda"
and "Dynamite Road."
Macari/Edelstein's
other credits include "No Place Like Home," directed by
Amy Heckerling. "The Invisible" is a remake of the feature
film from Oscar-nominated Swedish directors Joel Bergwall and Simon
Sandquist ("Victor").
Klavan
is repped by Endeavor.

Lions Gate weds Foley to 'Wife'
Burns championed project, will oversee with Sacchi
By Dana Harris
Lions Gate Films has purchased the feature rights to Andrew Klavan's
novel "Man and Wife," with James Foley set to direct. Klavan,
who wrote the novel "Don't Say a Word" upon which that film
was based, will adapt.
"Man and Wife" follows a psychiatrist in an ostensibly perfect
marriage in New England. His treatment of a mysterious young man begins
to reveal his wife's hidden past. Book was published by Forge last
year.
Ithaka Entertainment's Braxton Pope and Andrew Weiner will produce
with Klavan. Production is slated to begin later this year.
Lions Gate vice chairman Michael Burns championed the project and
will help oversee production with VP of development John Sacchi.
Foley's credits include Lions Gate's "Confidence" and "Glengarry
Glen Ross."
Klavan's novel "True Crime" was the basis for the Clint
Eastwood movie of the same name.
